Performance Measurements: Fact or Opinion

Synopsis of the Article:  

Have you ever been in a meeting where all that seemed to happen were arguments over whose numbers were right? Then at the next meeting, everyone came armed with ten pounds of supporting data. And once again the majority of the discussion was how their numbers were right and yours were wrong.

 Many companies have been able to break out of this pattern by establishing some basic ground rules. Each key business term is defined (example: monthly sales) and its data source documented. Additionally, when appropriate a performance measurement is created. Each performance measurement has a goal or expected performance target set along with the tolerances or range of acceptable performance. Now the meetings are focused on facts not opinions.
